Jingle Jangle
I was making a list of Christmas movies to watch this year and I noticed something: everyone in them is white. There hasn't been a major Black-centered Christmas film until now. The Christmas Victoria-set musical, Jingle Jangle, stars a mostly Black cast. It is a celebration of Black culture and heritage.
Forest Whitaker plays inventor Jeronicus Jangle. When he was younger he owned a world-famous toyshop, but lost everything when his apprentice stole his blueprints. In the present he is a broken man who is in mourning. The pace of the movie picks up when Journey comes into the story and brings energy and curiosity that makes the film feel magical. She adds to the message that anyone can achieve anything.
Writer-Director David E. Talbert serves up a cinematic adventure as Jeronicus's granddaughter, Journey, attempts to salvage the reputation of her grandfather. The film is crafted with care from the dance routines to the costumes. Netflix has opened the door to so much possibility by greenlighting a Black Christmas movie.
