Uncle Frank

Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany) left his small hometown and moved to New York to pursue a career as an academic and live life as an openly gay man. Frank is idolized by his teenage niece Beth (Sophia Lillis). In a time jump to four years, she follows him to New York University where he teaches. He lets her into the life he has kept his family out of that includes his live-in boyfriend, Wally.

The pacing of the film is very fast, it never settles down to catch a break. It moves on from one thing to the next with no explanation. There is a sense of impatience in the story and characters. It handles so many heavy topics and then resolves them seconds later where it doesn't make sense how individual characters changed their mind so fast. It is flooded with flashbacks of Frank's traumas and relationship with his family that cram the movie with themes.

The performances are amazing but it never invests in the characters which makes it hard for the audience to do.
