Over the Moon
Netflix's new family fantasy adventure, Over the Moon, follows 13-year-old Fei Fei who builds a rocket and flies to the moon. Fei Fei believes in the mythical goddess, Chang'e. Fei Fei's dad brings home a new girlfriend four years after the death of Fei Fei's mother and it upsets her. She believes that if she can prove Chang'e exists then her father will dump his girlfriend so she sets out on her adventure.
The character design of each animated character is so expressive and beautiful. It allows them to have a real emotional force as animated characters, in the scene where Fei Fei scrunches her face you can see her discomfort with her dad's plans to remarry.
The film takes a turn when she gets to the moon. Chang'e is real and they spend time together singing disco-pop. The dazzling K-pop lunar universe is mesmerizing to watch. There is not much to watch in the second half, but the artistry is so compelling that you stick around. The message about loss feels very predictable, but the trippy moon experience saves the film.
