Senior Year: Phoned In Culture Clash

Stephanie Conway is a high school senior who aspires for the perfect life filled with being prom queen, marry the hottest guy at school, and living in her dream home. It looks like she is on track to achieve her fantasy until she ends up in a 20 year coma. Awake at the age of 37 she does the only thing that makes sense: reenroll in high school to be prom queen.

Senior Year treads in familiar territory of Mean Girls and Clueless making this film feel like a fun throwback to the early 2000’s. This film takes a unique turn when it mixes the 90’s way of life with Gen Z. The film isn’t trying to teach anything new or deliver a powerful message. At it the core it is about being yourself and is overall a fun fantasy watch.

Rebel Wilson’s performance feels reminiscent of her work in Pitch Perfect which is enjoyable but doesn’t showcase anything new in her comedic range. Angourie Rice perfectly nails a younger Wilson to where you want more of her onscreen.

Overall out of Netflix’s slate of forgettable films this is one that manages to lead among the pack and deliver a good time.
