Marry Me: JLO in Her Element

Marry Me could almost be classified as a meta biopic for Jennifer Lopez (minus marrying a random math stranger) because it showcases all the reasons we love JLO.

A constant of Jennifer Lopez’s public persona is the obsession tabloids have with her romantic life versus her talents as a singer, actress, and producer. Her return to rom-coms plays this as an underlying theme that blurs the line between JLO and her character of Kat.

Lopez plays Kat Valdez who is about to marry another singer during a televised concert that is supposed to promote their new single “Marry Me.” Seconds before she is about to go on stage she learns Bastian (Maluma) is cheating on her so she makes an impulsive decision to marry match teacher, Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson).

The predictable plot leads to the two married strangers to try to make it work for the sake of saving Kat’s public image. From their photo-ops the two begin to start appreciating each other while learning important life lessons. Charlie is under the radar compared to Kat’s constant life on display. They use their relationship to better one another.

While the story feels like one we have hear before, the charisma of Owen and star quality of JLO make it an enjoyable throwback to rom-com glory.
