Unicorn Store: A reminder to not give up on our dreams
Fresh off her Marvel Debut, Netflix released the anticipated directorial debut of Academy Award-winner Brie Larson. The film was originally premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and has just been released on Netflix. The entire film felt like one magical trip into the life of a failed artist who does not exactly follow social norms. The film follows Kit (Brie Larson) who has a difficult time adjusting to adulthood. Kit is a quirky woman whose major goal in life is to have a unicorn. Kit prefers to live in a childhood world filled with glitter and rainbows than to face the reality of adulthood. It is evident in the way she dresses and behaves throughout the movie. Her mind is different from those around her causing a disconnect between her and the other characters who cannot understand why she thinks this way.
Kit's parents do not know how to deal with her and once she hits her low point she takes a job at a temp agency. She is tasked with making copies in her drab wardrobe while her boss takes an immediate interest in her. She then comes face to face with a supernatural store ran by Samuel L. Jackson. He promises her a unicorn if she follows some simple rules. The film through here follows Kit as she becomes more social with those around her and seems to adjust herself to the adult world while preparing for her unicorn. The movie has some slow points and flaws but viewers are easily distracted by the loud wardrobe and aesthetically pleasing cinematography. It is hard to follow the character development of Kit as her character switches from different personalities of being childlike while also dry-witted. The Unicorn Store is charming and gives a dark insight into the reality of the adult world. Though the ending is confusing, it is a great film to watch in times where you feel lost and need to remember what your purpose and passion for life is. It is an unusual film and definitely not a story that has been told.
