American Horror Story: 1984
The newest season of American Horror Story follows the classic 80's slasher theme from its spandex-wearing characters to the deserted camp setting. The first episode starts off in 1970 at the summer camp as three camp counselors find themselves at the end of a bloody death by this season's antagonist, Mr. Jingles. The episode then jumps to 1984 and the excitement of the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This season's ensemble is brought together in an aerobic class where one of the characters is escaping LA by being a counselor at Camp Redwood. He somehow convinces the rest of the group to join him. Brooke (Emma Roberts) is hesitant to go but after a surprise attack in her apartment by the Night Stalker, she decides to tag along.
As the group makes their way to camp they are faced with many warning signs including a crazy guy at a rundown gas station that told them that it was a bad idea to reopen the camp. There are also warnings by a hitchhiker and old camp administrators. During the first night at the camp, they hear from the survivor of the camp massacre about that bloody night and why she decided to reopen the camp. Along with this, there is a huge storm and a mysterious car around the campsite. The perspective also changes from the group's point of view to the person that is watching them sit around. This causes suspense in the show and that anything can happen at any time. The cast continues to make questionable decisions in this environment like Billie Lourd and Matthew Morrison hooking up in the lake during a storm.
We know Mr. Jingles is on the loose after a flashback shows how he escaped his mental institution and released all the other patients. There is even a newspaper clipping in his cell of the reopening of Camp Redwood signaling his return to his murder scene. He's going back to finish the scene after seeing one of his victims survived. Mr. Jingles is found by Brook that night and he chases her and then disappears. This makes Brooke look like she made the whole thing up. Mr. Jingles calls her on a payphone and jingles his keys and at the same time, we see the Night Stalker is also there. The first episode sets up the rest of the season for a fun, nostalgic slasher film with two killers on the loose.
