King Richard

How did Serena and Venus Williams become tennis superstars Reinaldo Marcus Green’s King Richard looks at the man behind it all: their father, Richard Williams.

At its heart, it is a story about fatherhood and shines a light on the people that helped the sisters reach stardom. Will Smith gives an incredible performance as Richard Williams. He is able to balance both the good and bad of the father. He breathes humanity and authenticity into a role that in the wrong hands would become an impression. Even when his ego gets in the way, Smith is able to show that William’s actions are all stemming from a place of love. He plays well off of the supporting characters, especially his two on-screen daughters. The family dynamic is amazing to watch.

The film works to create a feel-good story and in the end, it does exactly that. It maintains the normal biopic formula but keeps it engaging. The family moments are where this film really shines. It perfectly communicates the love, time, and commitment both Williams and his wife Brandy have for the family.

King Richard leaves you feeling inspired and empowered as Beyonce’s Be Alive closes out the credits.
